WESG 2016: Start of the first qualifiers

Two companies – StarLadder and ImbaTV – are responsible for the regional qualifications of the world's largest eSports tournament – WESG (World Electronic Sports Games). The championship, announced by the company Alisports (part of the Chinese internet-giant Alibaba Group), will have four regional qualifiers.

The championship of WESG was announced in spring 2016 during the Alisports press conference. The prize pool of the WESG Global Grand Finals will amount to $3.7 million, the winners of the regional qualifiers will be granted ¥1,36 million (approximately US$205,000). The first season of WESG will include 4 eSports games: Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, StarCraft II and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.

«There is one important characteristic of WESG – the tournament rules are very close to the rules of the Olympic Games, e.g. each team may only consist of players representing the same country», explains Stepan Shulga, Executive Producer at StarLadder. «This could help eSports to be recognized as official sports and potentially included in the Olympic Games».

The regional qualifiers for the WESG Global Grand Finals will take place in the following four regions: Asia-Pacific (APAC), Europe & CIS, North & South Americas, Africa & Middle East. The qualification spots to the WESG Global Grand Finals will be distributed among the winners of the regional qualifiers as follows:

China (host) 1 1 1 1
